Speculative design | Design fiction
Eating through 2074 is a dystopic fiction around the future of food in a world of people that are independent of the need for biological sustenance. It is an attempt at providing points to speculate on and reflect back on how today’s lifestyles and cultural shifts could take a dark turn.
With the earth’s food supplying capacity to the anthropocene arriving closer to its threshold by the day (~10 billion people), how might the new age man/woman’s eating habits evolve?
Food afterall, isn’t just about the food itself. It is intertwined with lifestyle patterns and cultural choices that co-affect each other as they constantly change.
A successful life in 2074 means the ability to create a healthy balance between the two forces of sustenance, time(which is both - the currency to purchase food and everything else; and the duration of a lifespan) and energy(which is biologically necessary for sustenance).
// Time = currency
Energy = food
Can you do it? Or will you die poor? //
Fortunately for us, we'll be observing a day of eating of Dr.Heinz Doofenshmirtz, a Machine Psychologist. Thanks to his profession, he is financially very comfortable and has more time in his hands than he needs.
Conclusion :
What could such a mechanical life in the future mean to us today?
...
How does it reflect our erratic and goal driven cultures of today?
...
What is the real relation between time, food and currency in today's world, and how do they trickle down to affect other elements of our habits and cultures? How do they affect those at the bottom of the economic race?
...
Can we redesign food to change what it means to us altogether?
